Always willing to explore new musical terrain,
"Nashville Skyline" found Dylan taking a stab at an authentic country and western set. In spite of support from an all-star cast, including Charlie Daniels, Pete Drake and Charles McCoy, Dylan didn't sound particularly comfortable throughout the proceedings. Invoking his seldom heard strained upper register, material such as "Lay Lady Lay" (which provided Dylan with a fluke top-10 hit), "Tell Me That It Isn't True" and a duet with Johnny Cash on "Girl from the North Country" was fairly impressive. Unfortunately, the majority of the album
succumbed to a bland country sound. Anyone hearing "One More Night" or "I Threw It All Away") could only reach the conclusion Dylan wasn't cut out to be a C&W performer. Interestingly, exposure from an appearance on a Cash television special boasted sales, the set eventually hitting #3. (Cash subsequently won a Grammy for his liner notes on the album.) "Nashville Skyline" track listing: 1.) Girl form the North Country (Bob Dylan) - 2.) Nashville Skyland Rag (Bob Dylan) - 3.) To Be Alone with You (Bob Dylan) - 4.) I Threw It All Away (Bob Dylan) - 5.) Peggy Day (Bob Dylan) - 6.) Lay Lady Lay (Bob Dylan) - 7.) One More Night (Bob Dylan) - 8.) Tell Me That It Isn't True (Bob Dylan) - 9.) Country Pie (Bob Dylan) - 10.) Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You (Bob Dylan) - |
