With Don Kirshner and company raking in the money via their improbable success with The Archies, the early 1970s found a virtual flood of cartoon-based studio acts. One of the more bizarre (and entertaining) entries into the cartoon-band sweepstakes was The Groovie Goolies.
The Goolies actually have a link to The Archies in that Sabrina the Teenaged Witch was a spin off from The Archies. The Sabirna series in turn featured Drac, Wolfe and Frankie - aka The Groovie Goolies, who were then spun off as a stand alone cartoon that aired on CBS.
Pulling a page out of Kirshner's marketing book, The Goolies were given a shot at musical stardom. Produced by Richard Delvy (of Belvairs fame), "The Groovie Goolies" offered up a weird mix of cartoon novelty numbers and bubblegum pop. Penned by Martin and Mac Gayden, cartoonish tracks such as 'Bumble Goolie', 'Frankie' and 'Goolie Garden' were professional, but ultimately little more than throwaway filler. In contrast, some of the more pop-oriented stuff such as 'Save Your Good Lovin' For Me, 'We Go So Good Together' and 'Spend Some Time Together' was actually quite good and had it been released by a more mainstream outfit, probably would have seen considerable airplay. Unfortunately the liner notes don't provide any performance credits. I know Howard Morris handled the Frankie and Wolfie voices and Larry Storch did Drac on the television show. I don't know if they handled the record's vocals, or if it was actually writer Mac Gayden. Anyone out there know? Elsewhere, RCA tapped 'First Annual, Semi-Formal, Combination Meet-The Monster Population Part' b/w 'Save Your Good Lovin' For Me' as a single (RCA catalog number 74-0383).
