For most Americans reggae starts and stops with Bob Marley ... Shame since there are so many other talented artists plying the genre. One of them is Jamaica's Pablo Moses.
Born Pableto Henry and raised in the Jamaican countryside, by the time he was in high school Henry was performing in a number of school bands. Together with friend Don Prendes he formed The Canaries and began competing in local talent shows. The resulting publicity eventually attracted the attention of record label owner/bassist Clive Hunt and producer Geoffrey Chung. Recorded at Lee Perry's Black Ark Studios and released on Hunt's Sound Records label, Pablo Moses made his recording debut with 1975's "I Man a Grasshopper". Apparently inspired by televisions Kung Fu series, the 45 proved a substantial Jamaican hit. Moses released several less successful singles ("Blood Money", "We Should Be In Angola" and "One People"), before cutting his first LP - 1975's "Revolutionary Dream".
Perhaps inspired by Island Records massive sales with Bob Marley, United Artists decided to take a shot signing Moses to an American contract. Curiously, they elected to edit and repackage his Jamaican debut as "I Love I Bring". In addition to the new title and artwork, UA chose to slightly modify the track listing, dropping "We Belong In Angola". Musically the set featured a mix of earlier 45s and new studio material. Backed by a first rate band including drummer Larry Wallace and guitarist Mickey Chung, material such as "Revolutionary Dream", "Where Am I" and "Corrupted Man" served to showcase Moses' calm and thoughtful performances. The themes may have been a little more politically oriented than some of his contemporaries, but Moses could also rock out - check out the blazing guitar solo on "I Man Grasshopper". While we've only heard a couple of his other LPs, this remains our favorite!!!
