Given Michael Nesmith''s developed a reputation for following his own musical muse (which has frequently proven quite uncommercial), 1977's "From a Radio Engine to the Photon Wing" is a minor surprise in that it's unexpectedly mainstream and radio friendly. Recorded in Nashville, tracks such as "Casablanca Moonlight" and "More Than We Imagine" find Nesmith melding his signature country-rock stylings with clever and occasionally thought provoking lyrics. Personal favorites include a nifty "Navajo Trail" (the LP's only non-original), "We Are Awake" and "Love's First Kiss" (the latter would have made a dandy single). Elsewhere, the breezy "Rio" generated considerable airplay and featured a cool video. It even provided Nesmith with a massive radio hit in the UK.
