Normally when a
band makes the transition to a major record label things start to go
downhill quickly. At least for a couple of years The Replacements were
one of the rare exceptions to that ironclad rule. Signed by Sire
Records, their 1985 label debut "Tim"
teamed them with former Ramone Tommy
Erdelyi handling production chores. Creatively the album stood as a
showcase for main 'Placement Paul Westerberg. In addition to handling
lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Westerberg was credited with penning all 11
tracks. Drummer Chris Mars and guitarist Bob Stinson picked up
co-writer credits on 'Dose of Thunder'. In musical terms the album
dropped much of the group's earlier punk thrashing in favor of surprisingly
accomplished performances. Mind
you, tracks such as 'I'll Buy', 'Dose of Thunder' and 'Bastards of Young' remained raw and
ragged, but this time around those were the exceptions. Far more
common and catchy were tracks like 'Kiss Me On the Bus', 'Waitress In the
Sky' and 'Swingin Party' (one of Westerberg's prettiest
melodies). Great place to start if you're simply curious or a
casual fan. 1.) Hold My Life (Paul Westerberg) - 2.) I'll Buy (Paul Westerberg) - 3.) Kiss Me On the Bus (Paul Westerberg) - 4.) Dose of Thunder (Chris Mars - Stinson - Paul Westerberg) - 5.) Waitress In the Sky (Paul Westerberg) - 6.) Swingin Party (Paul Westerberg) -
