Following in the wake of such luminaries as
Peggy Lipton, Leonard Neroy and William Shatner, 1974's "Telly"
continued a long established American tradition of offering marginally
talented actors ("Kojack") an opportunity to embarrass themselves
in the music field. As such, the combination of Savalas' deeply felt
narratives ("You're a Lady") and froggy rasps allowed the
collection to succeed admirably. Ham handedly produced by Snuff Garrett,
popular covers such as "Leon Russell's "A Song for You",
Nilsson's "Without You" and the Righteous Brothers' "You've
Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" were hysterically inept. Even better were
Savalas' occasional efforts at sincerity, including "How
Insensitive". Hard to believe, but in England his cover of Bread's
"If" managed to hit #1. Hard to believe, but Savalas was
considered a sex symbol (maybe it was the happenin' open collar and chains).
Must have been something in the mid-'70s environment ... That said, the
album managed to reach #117. "Telly" track listing: not listed Savalas died in 1994. |
