During their early-'70s heyday, Madison,
Wisconsin's The Tayles harkened back to the days of classic garage rock.
Showcasing the talents of woodwind player Scott Eakin, drummer Rick
Markstrom, keyboard player Paul Petzold, guitarist Bob Schmidtke and bassist
Jeremy Wilson, the band debuted with the release of a pair of little heard
singles for the obscure Age of Aquarius label ("She Made Me that
Way" b/w "Bizarro Ben" and "Funny Paper Sam" b/w
"It's High Time"). Released by the small local CineVista label, 1972's "Whoaretheseguys" was a live effort recorded at Madison's Nitty Gritty Club. Heavily hyped by fans and reviewers, these guys were little more than your standard bar band. Among their shortcomings, even though all five members were credited with vocals, they lacked a strong singer. Musically they were certainly competent, though Eakin's flute bugged the hell out of us. With Schmidtke and Wilson responsible for all of the material, the collection steered the middle ground between cutesy nostalgia numbers ("Did It"), standard blues-rock ("Baby DoughDough") and longer jam-oriented material ("Bizzaro Ben"). Unfortunately, little on the ten track set was of repeated interest. At least "Angry with My Friend" had a little bit of meltdown guitar. A major disappointment, guess you had to be there ...
