ABC October 20, 2001 Separatist leader in Indonesian Maluku walks out of trial A separatist leader in Indonesia's war-ravaged Maluku islands has walked out of his trial, complaining that his safety was endangered. Alex Manuputty told reporters as he left the Ambon District Court , without seeking the judge's permission, that his personal security could not be guaranteed. Manaputty, who heads the Front for a Sovereign Maluku, or FKM, is charged with violating rules of the civil emergency authority by flying the flag of the separatist South Maluku Republic on April the 25th. The flag-hoisting ceremony was held days after Maluku Governor Saleh Latuconsina issued a letter warning the FKM against separatist acts. The trial, which opened on Friday, was adjourned until Monday. A police commander said security was "already maximum" but pledged to tighten it further on Monday. © 2001 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
