ASSOCIATED PRESS Two Dead In Religious Fighting On Indonesia's Maluku JAKARTA (AP)--Fighting between Christians and Muslims on Indonesia's Maluku islands Friday left a soldier and a policeman dead, officials said. At least 11 civilians were also wounded in the battle between gunmen riding on speed boats in waters near Ambon island, said Ishak Umarella, a doctor at Al Fatah hospital. It was the second deadly incident in the region this week. On Monday, two people were killed and 17 others injured when a homemade bomb exploded in Ambon, the region's capital. Maluku and its neighboring North Maluku, collectively known as the Moluccan Islands, have been wracked by conflict between Muslims and Christians since January 1999 that has left more than 5,000 people dead. The region, 2,600 kilometers northeast of Jakarta, was also known as the Spice Islands during Dutch colonial times. Copyright © 2001 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
