Bomb Blast Kills Two, Injures 14 In Indonesia's Ambon
JAKARTA (AP)--A homemade bomb exploded Monday in Indonesia's Maluku
province, killing two and injuring 14 people, police and witnesses said.
Police chief Lt. Col. Hasanudin said unknown assailants threw the device into an
electronics market in the provincial capital, Ambon. The blast killed a 51-year-old
woman and her son. Fourteen others were injured.
Earlier, a bomb exploded along the demarcation line between the Christian and
Muslim sections of the town, said Hasanudin, who like many Indonesians only uses
one name. No one was injured.
The region, also known as the Moluccas, has been wracked by three years of fighting
between Muslims and Christians that has claimed about 9,000 lives.
Christian and Muslim communities in the region, 2,500 kilometers northeast of
Jakarta, are now completely segregated.
