Deutsche Presse-Agentur, October 19, 2001 Indonesian prosecutor accuses Maluku secessionist of flag-flying Jakarta, An Indonesian government prosecutor in Ambon, Maluku, on Friday indicted an alleged secessionist leader for raising the island's independence flag at his home seven months ago, a charge that could lead to a year's imprisonment, court sources said. Alex Manuputty was indicted by prosecutor Wayan Suwarna for raising the flag of the South Maluku Republic at his home on April 25. If found guilty, Manuputty faces a maximum sentence of one year in jail, said Yunus Saiya, head of the Ambon prosecutor's office, in a telephone interview with Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. To assure fairness at the trial, which is scheduled to continue on Saturday, the Ambon court has assigned three judges to the case from three different religions - Islam, Hindu and Christian Protestant - with the Hindu judge coming from Bali and the Moslem one from Makassar, said Saiya. Manuputty is alleged to be a leader of the Front for a Sovereign Maluku, a secessionist group. The Maluku islands, situated about 2,300 kilometres northeast of Jakarta, have been the site of bloody communal violence between their Christian and Moslem populations since early 1999. The violence has claimed more than 4,000 lives and left tens of thousands of people homeless.
