The Jakarta Post, Nov. 1, 2001 I gave the money to an Islamic foundation: Akbar JAKARTA (JP): House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Akbar Tandjung said on Wednesday that he did not keep Rp 40 billion (US$4 million) in nonbudgetary funds belonging to the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) but had handed it over to an Islamic foundation. "I gave the money to an Islamic foundation, named Raudhatul Jannah," Akbar, who was the state secretary when the alleged transaction was made, was quoted as saying by SCTV television station after four hours of questioning at the office of the deputy attorney general for general crimes. He said the money was handed to the foundation in the second meeting between himself and Ruskandar, then Bulog's deputy chief for finance, at his office in the State Secretariat compound. "I had two meetings with Ruskandar -- on March 2, 1999 and on April 20, 1999. And it was during the second meeting that I told Ruskandar to transfer the money to the foundation," Akbar said. The alleged misuse of the Bulog money was revealed by former Bulog chairman Rahardi Ramelan before government investigators early this month. Rahardi said that the Rp 40 billion was part of a total of Rp 54.6 billion distributed for different purposes. Akbar previously claimed that the Rp 40 billion was used to support the government's social safety net program, while another Rp 10 billion reportedly went to then Indonesian Military (TNI) chief Gen. (ret) Wiranto and the remaining Rp 4.6 billion was used to compensate for the cancellation of a 1996 land swap deal between Bulog and wholesale firm PT Goro Batara Sakti. Wiranto testified before state prosecutors also on Wednesday that he did not keep the money but gave it to the defense ministry, which he said later used it for a nationwide reform campaign.
