VP mulls forming body to solve Maluku conflict

JAKARTA (JP): Vice President Hamzah Haz is considering forming a special body to solve the communal conflict in the Maluku islands, which has claimed more than 9,000 lives since it erupted in January 1999.

"The Vice President is considering forming a body or institution, whichever is suitable, to solve the Maluku problem comprehensively," chairman of the working group for the Maluku problem, Amir Hamzah, said after a meeting with the Vice President here on Wednesday.

Earlier, the working group said it wanted the government to form a national commission on the Maluku conflict and to review the state of civil emergency imposed in the province since last year to enable the commission to work properly.

The group also urged the government to buy an estimated 600 firearms held by civilians in a bid to reduce conflict in the province.

Amir said the body would be made up of representatives from the central government, the local government and the community.

The most important thing is that the body or institution has a simple organizational structure to enable it to work properly, he said.

He pointed out that the number of fatalities in over twoyears of protracted conflict in Maluku was probably more than 9,000 lives, since many relatives of victims often failed to report them to authorities for fear of their safety.

Asked about the Vice President's comment on the proposal to buy weapons from civilians in the restive province, Amir said Hamzah first had to discuss it with Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

He said despite the state of civil emergency, the Maluku conflict had shown no sign of abating, with violence still erupting at least every two days.
