The Jakarta Post, (9/22/2001 4:21:57 PM) Hundreds attack Police facilities in Central Sulawesi JAKARTA (JP): Hundreds of people, angered by the death of a 20-year-old man allegedly tortured by drunk policemen, attacked police facilities in Banggai, the capital of Bangkep district in Central Sulawesi from Thursday until Friday afternoon, damaging an office and two dormitories. "The mob was pacified by the Bangkep district head Ali Hamid," Antara quoted police sources as saying on Saturday. There were no casualties reported in the incident, which led to the evacuation of police officers' families. Police sources confirmed the incident, saying that two groups from the military district headquarters arrived to help contain the situation. "They arrived here Friday night and they have been deployed to riot-prone areas," police Sgt. Rachmat said. The situation in the city remained tense on Saturdayafternoon. Banggai borders with Maluku province.
