* Ja'far calls for war in Ambon *

The commander of Laskar Jihad Ja'far Umar Thalib called for a war against the followers of Southeast Maluku Republic (RMS) who are mostly are Christians during his tablig akbar (sermon) at the Al-Fatah mosque yesterday (23/10). He also regrets that the Government of Indonesia have protected the independence movement such as the RMS, and never paid attention to Muslims. In his speech, Ja'far also accused the Governor of Maluku, Saleh Latuconsina of breaking up the unity of Muslims in Maluku by establishing a new organization, the Maluku Muslims Coordination Agency (BIMM) aside from MUI Maluku.

* 18 Philippine fishermen ready for deportation *

The18 fishermen from the Philippines who were arrested last week by soldiers of Yonif 731/Kabaresi long the coast of West Seram waters will be sent back to the Philippines. The Immigration Office in Maluku coordinated their deportation with the Philippine Consulate in Manado, North Sulawesi. The arrested fishermen's boat went adrift to Indonesian waters in West Seram due to engine trouble.

* Governor must watch out for movement of Ja'far *

A member of Ambon City Council, Yance Wenno, SH, stated that the Governor must proactively watch every movements of Ja'far Umar Thalib while he is in Ambon. This is to anticipate unexpected reactions by Muslims who may be prompted by on his provocations. He hopes that the Governor and the staff of the civil emergency board exert more efforts to maintain the calm situation, as the people in Maluku are aware that Ja'far's presence in Ambon could trigger new conflict.

* Polda must clarify status of Ja'far Umar Thalib *

A civil servant, Willem H, questioned the status of Ja'far Umar Thalib in Ambon, as he was under house-arrest (Tahanan Rumah) in Jakarta. He said the Maluku Police must be able to shed light on his (Ja'far) status. If possible Ja'far Umar Thalib should be taken back to police custody as delivered a slanderous speech against the Government of Maluku, the TNI, and the police at Al-Fatah mosque last Tuesday (23/10).

* No data regarding destroyed and burned schools *

A member of Maluku Parliament, Ir. Junus Tipka, reported that until now the Maluku Education Department have no accurate data on destroyed and burned schools throughout Maluku. This could cause problems, as the Parliament could not present an appropriate budget for the education sector in Maluku for year 2002. In this regard, he looks forward to the immediate action of education officials in Maluku to meet the requirements of the local Parliament.

* Yet to change status of civil emergency *

The faction chairman of Golkar party in Maluku Richard Louhenapessy, SH disagrees with the proposal to the Central Government of Indonesia to change the Government status in Maluku from state of civil emergency to state of civil order (tertib sipil) in the near future. In his view, the Government should have a set of criteria to help them reach a decision on whether to change or not. He hopes that the Government could set up parameters that could be used to ensure that there is a basis to reach their decision.

* GPP conducts workshop for children *

The Maluku Women's Caring Movement (GPP) conducted a two-days Workshop for children with a theme: To build up resilience in faith against drugs, alcohol, and free sex". According to Olivia Lasol a committee member of the said workshop, 150 children from both communities, Muslim and Christian attended. The aim of this workshop is to give more opportunities for children to know about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and free sex in their communities
