Poppers: Sonic Disruptor’s debut album can recall you many things, pop life or people who live pop star lives, or even the very popular drug that drive crazy young people all over the world. In other words, the perfect tittle for such an ambiguous piece of work (a trade mark from SD) where we can found a peculiar sound diversity.
The album presents the band as a perfect combination of 60’s psychedelic guitar rock and 90’s noise pop with nice songs and introspective vocals not so hidden by distorcion effects anymore (a difficult task which SD seems to have reached without any problem). Some specials remarks must be noticied in thid crossover, songs where irony and narcissism walk together take us a new kind of pop, or as SD prefers to recall it: “Lysergic Pop”.
Fine melodies work together with introspective vocals and well structured lyrics, as it can be clearly seen in songs as Angels Wheels and Emigravity. Other fine items include waves of acid guitars, melody bass lines, well placed and precise drums, and keyboards that create a single atmosphere (sometimes almost experimental), everything building a “Wall Of Sound” that identifies the band and serves well as scenery for the young characters that fill their lyrics.
The band has its origins in Guarulhos (São Paulo) and from there they started looking for the ‘perfect pop’ in the summer of 1990. Their inspirations relies on the Beatnik Generation and its symbols (Twiggy, Kerouac, Borroughs, etc) and Andy Warhol’s pop art influenced the band on its visual part.
Today, after four demo tapes and a participation in the No Major Babes Compilation - Vol.II (where other brazilian bands also had the chance to show their work), Sonic Disruptor releases Poppers, a singular and peculiar album in every way.
