Autumnal Equinox
Today is the Autumnal Equinox, the day of the year when just about every place on the planet should experience 12 hrs of daylight and 12 hrs of darkness. That's fine, unless you live at extreme southern latitudes such as Antarctica. To me it means only 35 more days of having the sun above the horizon at least a few minutes each day.
Today the town of McMurdo participated in a community event called daisy picking. It's not what you think, unless of course you've been to McMurdo. Daisy picking is a community event which allows the entire town of McMurdo to participate in picking up trash and other loose debris which might be laying around town. This morning the weather was absolutely perfect. No wind, clear skies and what seemed like moderate temperatures. By 1:00 when daisy picking began the weather had changed dramatically. The ambient temperature was -15F and the winds had increased to a steady 30 mph. Great weather for daisy picking.
