Many branches of the Montagues in America, have the tradition that the name Montague is a "ROYAL" name. There is some truth in the tradition. The name in England, howeve r, has not only been descended from royalty, but it has a higher and more lofty significance , for the Montagues were the parents and ancestors of Kings. As it may be of interest to man y of the name and blood, to know exactly how the name has been connected with royalty in anci ent times, the following has been carefully compiled, and will be found sufficiently complet e to justify the tradition. Sir Simon Montague, the 8th in lineal descent from Drogo, (the fi rst, of the name in England) married Aufricia, dau. of Fergus, King of the Isle fo Man, desce nded from Orry, King of Denmark. He became in her right King of Man, and both the isle, and t he title as King of the isle, descended to his son and grandson. Sir Edward Montagu, one of t he grandsons of Sir Simon, was a great warrior of his day, was Governor of the Castle of Werk , when elected Pope at Rome, and others. Among the descendants of Philippa Montagu not mentio ned above, were the two young Princes, sons of King Edward IV, smothered in the Tower of Lond on by order of their Uncle King Richard III. They were Edward, born in the Sanctuary at Westm inster and proclaimed King Edward V [but never crowned] at the death of his father, though on ly eleven years old; and Richard Duke of York, born at Shrewsbury.

NOTE: One of the more unusual punishments imposed by Orange Co. Court was han ded down on Thursday, January 23, 1745. Having found Eve, a negro slave of Peter Montague, gu ilty of murdering her master by placing poison in the milk she served him, the court ordered : "Therefore it is considered by the court that the said Eve be drawn upon a hurdle to the pl ace of execution and there to be burnt." The sentence was carried out.spouse: Merry, Elizabeth (1696 - 1732)
Film#: 170875 Page#: 312 Ord.#: 12239 As the descendnts of Drogo took the Latin spelling of t heir name so as not to be confused with the English who inhabited England before they were co nquered in 1066, so did many of the descendants of Peter Montague take the Irish pronounciati on of the name Montague during the American Revolution so as not to be associated with the En glish who they were fighting. The Montague name in Ireland came from MacTague and they are no t in any way related to the Montague descendants of Drogo. The Irish pronounciation is Monta g with a long "a" and the "ue" silent. NOTE: With the creation of the new counties from Orang e County land area in June 1749, the Orange County Court decided "The court judging the prese nt situation inconvenient to the inhabitents are of the opinion that the court ought to be he ld near the dividing line of the lands of Erasmus Taylor and Timothy Crosthawait." That sit e is the present location of the town of Orange. On July 6, 1752, the first court session wa s held in the new building. One of the members serving on the first grand jury of the reconst ituted County of Orange, of May 24, 1750, was Peter Mountague.spouse: Henderson, Elizabeth (*1738 - )

ADDRESS: RFD #1 Addison, PA 15411 The old saying about history repeating itself came true when the Somerfield bridge - carrying US Route 40 across the Youghiogheny Lake - was opened on August 15, 1947. The first person across was Ray Fielding Montague, operator of a store in the vicinity. In 1818 - 129 years ago - the first person across the old stone bridge over the Youghiogheny River at Somerfield, Pa. was Mr. Montague's great-grandfdather David Montague, driver of a stage coach between Cumberland, Md. and Brownsville, Pa. The stage coach man lived at the foot of Chestnut Ridge on a property that remains in the family to this day. The old stone bridge, known as the "Great Crossings Bridge," was begun in 1809, and was opened on July 11, 1818. A lot of changes have been made in the span of years that came between the "firsts" that came between great-grandfather and great-grandson. In the early 19th century David Montague was high on the seat of his stage coach, with the reins of several horses in his hands. When Ray F. Montague went across, with his eight month old granddaughter, Linda Rae Prinkey, beside him, he controlled at the touch of his hand a machine many times stronger in horsepower. The stone bridge sapanned only the river; the new highway bridge carries the road high above what will be a vast reservoir created by the Confluence dam.spouse: Rodeheaver, Margaret J. (1911 - 1966)
