      Research Work

      Honours Project

During the previous years the developed world has been donating many drugs to third world countries to alleviate the chronic shortage of drugs. Where as the cause is applausible some of these drugs are known to have a very short shelf life which could be worsened by the soaring temperature of Sub-Saharan Africa. It is against this back ground that I decided to quality assure three of such drugs. Glibenclamide, Propranolol and allopurinol. It was found that the sulphonyurea glibenclamide is rather unstable with not only a possibility of uncontrolled diabetes but toxicity. I received a prize for this research work.

      MSc Project

My project is aimed at analysing the frequency of mutations in TPMT, a 35kD cytosolic protein, which catalyses the S-methylation of heterocyclic and aromatic sulfhydryl compounds, in genomic DNA from two groups of patients with rheumatic disease, those who failed Azathioprine therapy and those who have a clinical benefit from azathioprine therapy. This will help in establishing whether heterozygosity or mutation of this enzyme genome is related to Rheumatoid Arthritis Prognosis after Azathioprine Therapy. This will also allow assessment of the clinical utility of PCR-based assays for prospective prediction of the efficacy of anti-rheumatic therapy.

      Publications
My first publication was on reuse of donated expired drugs . Central African Journal of Medicine.(`1995)

I am a column writer in a monthly teenager magazine. This is a column on adolescence and teen behaviour. I put a lot of work in understanding teenagers. I hope to be a teen adviser later in life which I have already started doing some work on. The magazine circulates to about 100 000 teenagers in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia and Malawi. I take pleasure in socialising with western teenagers and making direct cross comparisons with African teens as most of Africa continues to become westernised.
