The "Badlands" ORV Park is a privately-owned
tract of about 700
acres in western Indiana, about 30
minutes south west of Lafayette.
It is owned and operated by Troy Myers
and his brother alongside
their dirtbike business, among other
things.
It is literally
a smorgasbord of off-road riding: sand dunes, pea gravel
hills, bottomless
mud, the tightest off-camber woods trails, extreme
rock crawling,
dropoffs, hood-deep water, etc. You name it, it's
probably here.
Troy and his buddies compete in various rock-crawling
events using
an Avalanche Sniper (which they won the Warn event with),
Samurais with
quarter-elliptics, and various other "toys". So they've got
an idea how
to build trails to test a rig's mettle.
There are two
main events held here, the "Superlift 4x4 Adventure" in April
and the "Fall
Fest" hosted by a local Jeep club in August. Each of these
events attract
well over 100 vehicles of every type imaginable. As of
the middle of
1999, they've added a lunch stand at the park, but if
you prefer to
pack your own, Attica has a decent grocery store.
In addition,
there are auto parts and a drug store in town.
Being in the
middle of BFE, lodging is unavailable in the town of Attica,
But there are
some alternatives. Most of us like to stay at Summer's
Camp, which
is one of the cleanest, neatest campgrounds around with
a store, laundry
facilities, abundant clean showers, grassy/roomy
primitive camping,
as well as complete RV sites. Camping is $8
per night, RVs
probably $15 or so. The campground is 15 minutes
from Attica,
and I've reserved a block of primitive sites for
tent camping.
If you're RV'ing it, call for reservations NOW:
Summer's Campground: (765) 762-2832
(Note:
All awards and dinners will be served at Summer's Camp.)
If you prefer
to Motel it, the Boswell Motel is a clean little place
run by a mom
and pop, about 20 minutes from town. They charge
about $30 per
night for their rooms, but since they only have 20
or so, call
for reservations at least a month in advance:
Boswell Motel: (800) 397-5059
Other (pricier) options in Danville, Il are about 30 minutes away:
Super 8 Motel:
(217) 443-4409
Ramada Inn:
(217) 446-2400
Redwood Inn:
(217) 443-3690
