John Wesley Whitt,
Farmer, Sections 25 and 26; P.O. Blue River; he is a son of Meredith
and Sarah Atkins, natives of Virginia; they left their native State and located
in Kentucky; in 1842 came to this State and located in this county.
John W. was born in Kentucky in 1834; he came to this state with his
parents, since which time he has been engaged in farming and lumbering.
He married November 25, 1857, Miss Sarah B. Lea, a native of Ohio;
they have three children.
-----------
24 Mar 1921--Muscoda Progressive
JOHN WHITT, 86 years old, a veteran hunter and trapper, who for many
years made his home in a log cabin in Watterstown township two miles
south of Blue River, died in a Dubuque (Duluth) hospital March 8 as a result of a
paralytic stroke which came while he was seated by the fireplace in his
lonely home in the regions of Sawyer county. Friends from a neighboring
lumber camp, who occasionally stopped to pass the time of day with Old
John, found him helpless in the afternoon of March 3.
[*The Home Reading for the Methodist Episcopal Church was Matthew 28.]
-------------
Family Lore, according to Bob Bloyer, said that
John Whitt traveled with Daniel Boone to Kentucky,
(from Virginia? ) on the Daniel Boone trail. It's more likely
that it was John's father Meredith, if there's any truth
to the lore.
------------------
My mom originally said that their family was related to the Boone's. Then they traveled together through the Cumberland Gap (which I researched a bit). Finally, the truth is that they came through the Gap--as did every other family coming from Virginia to Kentucky

Madison, Wis.
Dec 7, 1901
Sir,
I have the honor to return herewith with report, the papers in No. CR566315 / 705989
Mary J. Hicks, widow of William F. Hicks, Co. A 11th Wis. Vol. Inf. P.O. address, Lancaster,
Grant, Co. Wis. Claimant is pensioned under act of June 27 1890 and the pending claim is
under the general law. She is also completing soldier's claim for rheumatism.
The case was referred to the S.E. W?? to determine origin and continuance of rheumatism and
disease of heart and came to me for further examination.
Of the witnesses named by claimant, J.W. Whitt is in Northern Wis. somewhere. He has separated
from his wife and no one seems to know where he is but as Mrs. Whitt informed me that he scarcely
knew the soldier. I do not think it matters.
Mr. Faber of the firm of Sawyer and Faber is still living but had but an indistinct recollection of soldier.
Mr. Ed Meyer could not recall that soldier suffered from any disability in fact had but a sliver?
acquaintance with him. I found several others who had a general knowledge of soldier but who knew
nothing about his disability.
The only evidence of any importance is that of Mrs. Jane Harris. This is corroborated to same extent
by that of Edward Wilkinson.
The utter absence of any evidence of origin makes this of little use however.
I recommend further examination for the testimony of Edwin Medhcott, Racine Buena Vista Co. IA
for origin.
Unless this witness testifies positively to origin I see no necessity for further examination.
Very respectfully,
Joseph Hall
Special Examiner
Hon. Commissioner of Pensions
Washington, D.C

Herman Mattfeld sold International Harvester Machinery from a large building. This building was bought in 1918 by Henry Enslin and moved to his farm across the tracks. It was used as a machine shed until 1960, when it was torn down. All the dimension lumber was used in the new machine shed that Herman Enslin built, and it still stands on his farm.
