(Mac)Auliffe;
Variant Spellings; Aulife, McAulife, McAuliff, McAuliffe.
MacAuliffe is a County Cork name and is rarely found anywhere else in Ireland. It sounds similar to MacOlaf and as the Norse founded Cork City it is logical to think that this is a Norse name. Not true, however, as MacAuliffe is an old Gaelic name and the sept is a branch of the MacCarthys.
In Irish the name is MacAmhlaoibh, son of Amhlaobh (Humphrey).
The family chief lived at Castle MacAuliffe near Newmarket in Co Cork. The last chief of the name was Michael MacAuliffe, a colonel in the Spanish army, who died in Spain in 1720.
US General Anthony MacAuliffe, the hero of Bastogne, was famous for his response of "Nuts" to a German demand for surrender.
