(O)Adair;
Variant Spellings; Adare, Adaire, O'Daury, O'Dawry.
The frequency of the name in Irish records in the seventeenth century would seem to indicate that this family, which came from Scotland, was associated with the Ulster plantations. Adair is also taken as the Anglicized form of the old Irish surname O Daire meaning descended from Daire. Daire is a Gaelic personal name.
The Adairs received large tracts of land in Donegal, Leix and the barony of Antrim. The coat of arms shown below is that of the Antrim family, that of the Scottish Adairs is slightly different.
Sir Robert Adair (1763-1855), was a noted diplomat and a friend of Charles Fox. James Adair (1709-1783), was a pioneer Indian trader and author of The History of the American Indians.
