Agnew;

Variant Spellings; Aignew, Egnew, O'Gnimh, O'Gnive, O'Gnyw, O'Gnew, O'Gneeve.

The name Agnew is derive from two sources, one the Norman family of D'Agneaux and the other an old Gaelic one of O Gnimh. At the time of the Norman invasion the D'Agneaux received extensive territory in the area of Larne, while the Irish O Gnimhs have always been numerous in the region of Belfast.

It is possible that the O Gnimhs originally came from Scotland as mercenaries and eventually they came to prominence as hereditary poets to the O' Neills. The last such poet was probably Fearflatha O'Gnive (d.1640).

In Irish the name is O Gnimh.

Sir James Wilson Agnew (1815-1901) was Premier of Tasmania while in the present day Spiro Agnew, the controversial vice president in the Nixon administration, though of Greek ancestry, choose to anglicize his name to Agnew.
