It is probable that the majority of the ancestors of the MacAlisters came from Scotland as galloglasses for the MacDonnells of Antrim. Today the name is found principally in counties Antrim and Derry; a variant of the name occurs in Kerry as MacEllistrum.
The name is derived from Alexander and in Irish both Mac Alastair and Mac Alastruim mean "Son of Alexander".
Oliver MacAlister (1715 -?) was a double agent for England and France while Sam MacAlister was a prominent rebel in 1798.
