The name Allen is an interesting one as in Ireland it has Irish, English and Scottish origins. The Irish Allens come from Tipperary and Offaly, while Allens of English origin came with the Cromwell invasion and are found scattered throughout the country. The Scottish Allens were part of Clan Campbell and were imported as mercenaries by the O'Donnells in the sixteenth century.

In Irish the name is O hAillin.

John Alen (1476-1534) was Lord Chancellor of Ireland while William Phillip Allen (1848-1864) was one of the "Manchester Martyrs". John Allen (d. 1850) was an intimate of Robert Emmet.
