This sept is a branch of the MacMahons and nowadays its members are to be found in counties Armagh, Louth and Monaghan.
In Irish the name is Mac Ardghail or son of Ardghal. The name is derived from the Irish word ard (height) and gal (valor).
James MacArdle (1729-1765) was a distinguished engraver and another James MacArdle (1700-1725) was a poet in Gaelic.
