MacAteer is the Irish equivalent of the Scottish MacIntyre though the latter name is also to be found in Ireland. MacAteer is mainly an Ulster name but over the years branches are also to be found in Sligo and Mayo.
In Irish the name is Mac an tSaor. Soar means free or carpenter or mason as is shown in the above variant spellings of the name.
Saint Kieran in the sixth century was known as Mac an tSaor as was V. Rev. Dr. John Carpenter, Archbishop of Dublin in the late seventeen hundreds.
