Barry is a name of Norman origin and in Ireland is to be found mostly in Co. Cork. The name came to Ireland in 1179 with Phillip de Barri who received large grants of land in the county. The family became thoroughly integrated and formed septs in the Irish manner
In Irish the name is de Barra and is derived from Old French Barri meaning 'rampart'.
The Barrys of Rathcormac Co. Cork changed the name to MacAdam in honor of one Adam Barry.
Of importance in the Barry clan was Phillip de Barry who became Baron Barry in1490 and whose descendents became Earls of Barrymore in 1627. David Barry (1605-1642) the first Earl of Barrymore fought and died in the 1641 war.
Kevin Barry (1902-1920) was a hero of the Irish War of Independence; as was Tom Barry who commanded the No.3 Cork Flying Column..
