Offaly, Tipperary, Fermanagh and Tyrone are the counties where the name is most common nowadays.
In Irish the name is O Banain no doubt derived from ban or white.
Maelpatrick O'Banan was bishop of Connor from 1152 to1172 and Gaelasius O'Banan bishop of Clogher in 1316.
The brothers Michael and John Banim (a corruption of Bannon) were eighteenth century novelists. Lieutenant Presley Neville O'Bannon (1784-1850) is a model of the hero and warrior for the United States Marine Corps. For his bravery at the battle of Derna on April 25, 1805 Lieutenant O'Bannon was presented with a ceremonial sword. This 'Mameluke' sword is the model for the marine officer's sword of today.
