Barrett;

Variant Spellings; Barratt, Barnett, Bartnett, MacPadine, MacEvilly, Staunton.

The surname Barrett is Norman in origin and while it has become recognized as an Irish name it is also common in England. The families settled in Co. Cork and in Co. Mayo and were quite distinct from each other.

In Irish the name Barrett is translated as Baireid and derived from Old French Barat meaning 'traffic or commerce'.

The Co. Mayo branch became completely hibernicized, forming a sept in the Irish manner; the sept chief being known as MacWattin. Today the name is corrupted to MacPadine. The Stauntons, another Norman family, adopted the name MacPadine and also MacEvilly (in Irish Mac an Mhileadha).

The Barretts of Co. Cork retained the bulk of their lands until the Williamite confiscation of 1691. Colonel John Barrett, the head of the family at that time had raised a regiment for the army of James II.

Richard Barrett (1740-1818) was a United Irishman; George Barrett (d.1784) was a noted landscape artist, while Michael Barrett was executed in 1868 in the last public execution in England.
