The name nowadays is found in Ulster in Co. Donegal and in Munster in Co. Cork. The original branch was that of Kilmacrenan in Donegal while the Cork branch is said to be descended from Begleys who came south as mercenaries.
In Irish the name is O Beaglaoich, possibly derived from beagloach or little warrior.
Conor Begley was co-author of the classic MacCurtin's English-Irish dictionary in 1732 and Henry Begley (d.1895) was a painter of landscapes.
