In Irish the name is O Beirn and is thought to have originated from the Norse Bjorn. The name is pronounced as O'Byrne and in Kildare and Wicklow is used as a synonym of O'Byrne though both septs are completely distinct.
There are two septs of the O'Beirnes and their territories are Roscommon and Mayo respectively..
Thomas Lewis O'Beirne (1748-18230, an apostate became a Protestant Bishop of Meath; Henry O'Beirne wrote about the American Indians and lived among them. O'Beirnes were prominent in the armies of France and Spain in 'The Wild Geese' period; an O'Beirne also took a major part in the American Civil War.
