Bermingham;

Variant Spellings; Birmingham, Birminghan, Bremigam, Bremigam, Brimage, Brimagum, Brimmagem, Brimmajen, Brimmigan, Brumagem, Brumigem, Brumiger, Brummagem, Brunnagen, Coarish, Corish, Korish, Macfeerish, Magorisk, McGorish, McGorisk.

The eponymous ancestor of the Berminghams was Robert de Bermingham who came to Ireland in Strongbow's invasion. Corish is a name derived from one Piers de Bermingham; Feoras, which developed into Corish, being the Irish for Piers.

Today the Berminghams are to be found for the most part in counties Galway and Kildare.

Bermingham has been translated into Irish as Mac Fheorais or son of Feoras.

The Berminghams were a warlike sept and in mediaeval times successfully fought in many battles both for and against the interests of the crown.

In 1584 Margaret Bermingham died while imprisoned for helping Catholic priests. The Berminghams were loyal to James II and suffered for it.

Father Patrick Bermingham was Warden of Galway in 1732, while John Birmingham (1816-1884), was a noted astronomer.
