Blake;

Variant Spellings; Blakes, Bleach, Blouk, Blowick, Caddell.

Blake is a name common to both England and Ireland; the Irish Blakes being descended from one Richard Caddell also known as 'Le Blaca' (The Black).

The family was granted large estates in Connacht, mainly in Co. Galway, and was prominent in Galway City where they were among 'The Fourteen Tribes' of that city,

A branch of the Blake family settled in Co. Kildare where they founded three Blakestowns.

In Irish the name is translated as de Blaca.

Several of the Blakes joined the Crusades. Sir Richard Blake was speaker of the Assembly of Confederate Catholics in 1647, while the man who poisoned Red Hugh O'Donnell was James Blake.

Xaverius Blake (1752-1784) squandered a fortune of over $2,000,000.00, an enormous sum for those times. William Hume Blake (1809-1870) chartered a ship and sailed to Canada with a number of his relatives. He established a prominent legal dynasty in that country.

The Gaelic name of O Blathmmhaic has been Anglicized to Blowick and more usually to Blake.
