(O)Breen;
Variant Spellings; MacBreen, Brien, Briene.
In the past there were two distinct Breen septs, the MacBreens, in Irish MacBraoin, of Co. Kilkenny and the O'Breens, in Irish O Braoin, of counties Westmeath and Offaly
Nowadays the use of either prefix with this name is rare.
Henry H. Breen (1805-1882), the poet was from County Kerry where the name has become common in the past three hundred years. Francis Breen the 1798 rebel was from County Wexford and Elizabeth Breen was one of the Irish nuns arrested in 1793 in France during the reign of terror there.
Patrick Breen (d.1908) was a member of the Donner party and kept a diary of that doomed expedition.
In modern times Dan Breen was a noted guerilla during the fight for Irish independence of 1916-1921.
