Browne;

Alternate Spellings; Brown, Broune.

Browne is a name common both to England and Ireland, though in England it is usually spelt without the e.

There are a number of Browne septs in Ireland, those of Galway City, Mayo and Killarney being the most important. The name is Norman in origin for the most part, deriving from a le Brun who came in that invasion. The Brownes of Killarney are Elizabethan in origin and are of English stock.

The Galway Brownes became one of the most important families in that city where they were one of the 'Twelve Tribes' of Galway. The family became completely Irish through intermarriage with the leading Irish families of the district. It is notable that the Kenmare peerage of the Kerry Brownes has become extinct.

In Irish the name is translated as Brunach.

Field Marshal Maximilian Ulysses von Browne (1705-1757) was descended from the Brownes of Camus, Co. Limerick. Field Marshal Browne was a prominent soldier in the Austrian Army and a thorn in the side of Frederick the Great during the Silesian Wars.

Admiral William Brown (1777-1857), said to be the founder of the Argentine navy was from Foxford, Co. Mayo.
