Butler;

Variant Spellings; Butler, Buttler. MacRichard.

In 1177 Theobald Fitzwalter became Chief Butler of Ireland and thus the Butlers of that country derived their name. They acquired great tracts of land in Kilkenny and the magnificent Kilkenny castle belonged to the family. Through the history of the country the Butlers feuded with the Geraldines (Fitzgeralds) and as they were the weaker family they tended to rely on the government for help. This is one explanation of the Butlers siding with the English and the fact that eitght Butlers held the post of Viceroy of Ireland.

The name has been translated in Irish as de Buitleir.

Thomas Butler 7th Earl of Ormond (d.1515) was Anne Boleyn's grandfather.

Abbe James Butler was chaplain to Prince Charles Stuart, "the Young Pretender", while Pierce Butler was an associate of Sarsfield and campaigned with him.
