MacCabe;

Variant Spellings; MacAbe, MacCabe, McCabe.

The MacCabes came to Ireland from the Hebrides in the fourthteenth century when they were hired as mercenaries by the O'Reillys and the O'Rourkes of Breffny. Later they formed their own sept and stayed on in Counties Cavan and Leitrim. As might be expected they were faithful followers of the Stuarts and as a result lost their estates after the battle of Aughrim in 1691.

In Irish the name is Mac Caba or son of the wearer of the hat. Caba in Gaelic is hat and in the case of the MacCabes refers to the distinctive hood the mercenaries wore when first they came from Scotland.

The bard Cathaoir MacCabe is remembered for his beautiful lament for the blind harper O Carolan. William Putnam MacCabe (1776-1821) was active in the 1798 rebellion being one of Lord Edward Fitzgerald's bodyguards. After the failure of the rebellion he went to France where he established a cotton mill near Rouen.

Edward MacCabe (1816-1885) became Archbishop of Dublin in1879 and a cardinal in 1882. Alasdair Mac Caba (1886-1972) founded the Educational Building Society in1935. In the present-day Eugene Macabe is a successful playwright and has had a number of his plays performed at Dublin's Abbey Theatre.

The motto of the MacCabe coat of arms is 'Aut vincere aut mori'.
