Variant Spellings; Cahalan, Cahalin, Cahallane, Cahelan, Cahelin, Cahillane, McCahil, O'Cahill.
Nowadays this name appears most often without a prefix of any kind, just as plain Cahill. Originally the sept was located in south Galway near the Clare border. However, through the years they have moved so that today they are to be found in greatest numbers in Cork, Kerry and Tipperary.
The name is derived from an Irish first name Cathal (Charles) and in the Gaelic is O Cathail.
Apparently, Flann O'Cahill was a martyr in 938 AD. Father William Cahill (1796-1864) collected for Ireland in the US during the Famine.
