OCallaghan is a common name in Ireland especially in Co. Cork. In Irish the name is O Ceallachain and the sept is descended from one Ceallachan (d. 952), King of Munster. The name is derived from the word ceallach meaning 'strife'.
Their original territory was in Kinelea, County Cork but after the Norman invasion they moved to the Mallow area where they flourish today.
The OCallaghans are one of the septs that resumed the prefix in recent times and today the OCallaghans are much more numerous than the Callaghans.
The sept has produced a number of distinguished Irishmen: Edmund OCallaghan 1797-1883) and John Cornelius OCallaghan, historians and Sir Francis OCallaghan (1839-1909), engineer.
OCallaghans were prominent in the Irish Brigades of France and Spain. The certified Chief of the Name today is a Spanish citizen.
