(O)Carey;
Variant Spellings; O'Keary, Carew, Carr, Ceary, Curran, Currane, Karey, Keern, Keery, Kirrane.
Carey is one of those names that, in translation becomes a catchall for many Irish names.
The name is usually thought to represent O Ciardha, an Irish family driven from Co. Kildare by the Normans. However Carey has also been used for O Ceinin (Co. Mayo), O Ciarain (Co. Cork), Mac Giolla Ceire (Co. Galway), O Carra (Co. Galway), Mac Giolla Cathair (Co. Donegal) and for the nearly extinct surname of MacFhiachra (Co. Tyrone).
The name then because of its various origins may be expected to be found in many places throughout Ireland.
John Carey (1756-1826) was a classical scholar and the inventor of the shipwreck rocket. James Carey an informer after the Phoenix Park murders was shot in reprisal in 1883.
