(O)Cassidy;
Variant Spellings; Casaday, Cassadie, Casidy, Casley, Cassedy, Cassiday, Cassidi, Kessidy, O'Cassiday.
Though the name has carried both the O and Mac prefix nowadays it is more usually found as just plain Cassidy. The territory of the sept is in the Co. Fermanagh.
In Irish the name is O Caiside or descended from Caiside; it is derived from cas meaning curly headed.
The Cassidys were hereditary physicians to the Maguires. Giolla Moduda O'Cassidy (d.1143) wrote poetry that is still read today. The eighteenth century autobiography of Thomas Cassidy establishes him as an Irish Cassanova.
The motto of the O'Cassidy's coat of arms is 'Frangas non Flectes'.
