MacClancy;
Variant Spellings; Clancy, Clanchy, Glanchy.
In Irish the name is Mac Fhlanchaidh and the aspirated F is, of course, silent. The alternative form of Glancy is rare but is still found.
There are two septs of Clancy, one in Co. Clare and the other in Leitrim. The Clare sept is related to the MacNamaras and were hereditary brehons to the powerful O'Briens. The head of the Co. Leitrim family is the Chief of Dartry. Of the two septs the one of Co. Clare was the most influential upto the collapse of the Gaelic order in the seventeenth century.
After the second siege of Limerick many of the County Clare sept went to the continent as Wild Geese where they distinguished themselves.
Peadar Clancy was one of three prisoners murdered by the British in response to 'Bloody Sunday', 1920.
Today the internationally famous US author Tom Clancy bears this family's name.
