Collins;

Variant Spellings; Colins, O'Cullane, Culhane, Cullen, Cullian, Cullina, McCallan, Quillan.

Collins is a name that is common both to Ireland and England. O'Cullane, however, was a sept settled in west Cork when the Collinses arrived amongst them as they had been driven by the Desmond Fitzgeralds from their territory in Co. Limerick.

In Irish Collins is translated as O Coileain, while O'Cullane is O Cuilleain. The Irish word coilean means 'puppy or cub'.

Jerome Collins (d. 1850), was an arctic explorer and William Collins (1788-1847) was a painter and a member of the Royal Academy.

In the US Edward Knight Collins (1802-1878) was a ship owner and early steam enthusiast.

Tom Collins is the name given to a cocktail and in Australia to somebody who spreads rumors.

The Republic of Ireland owes much to this sept and to its most illustrious member Michael Collins (1890-1922). Without the leadership of Michael Collins it is doubtful that the War of Independence would have been brought to a successful conclusion.
