Variant Spellings; Conall, Conlan, Conley, Conlin, Conlon, Connellan, Connelly, Connolly, McConell, McConnell, McConnon. McConol, McConnville, McGonnell, O'Connell.
There were a number of O'Connell septs but the main surviving one is located near Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry. The Derry and Galway septs may be regarded as extinct.
In Irish the name is O Conaill or descended from Conall. Today the name is resuming the O prefix to a large extent.
Baron Moritz O'Connell (1727-1825) was a general in the Austrian Army and was chamberlain to the Empress Maria Theresa, while Daniel Count O'Connell (1743-1833) was the last colonel of the Irish Brigade in the French Army.
Sir Maurice Charles O'Connell was in the British army in Australia where he married the daughter of Captain Bligh of The Bounty.
Daniel O'Connell was the leading political figure on the Irish scene in the early nineteenth century when he achieved Catholic Emancipation for Ireland.
MacConnell is a different surname from O'Connell and is common in Ulster.
