At least two Gaelic septs answer to the name Connolly in English. The first of these O Conghalaigh (descended from Conghlach) is found in Galway and Monaghan, while the second O Coingheallaigh (descended from Coingheallach) is in West Cork, where they were supporters of the O'Donovans.
William Connolly (d.1729), of the Munster sept was speaker of the House of Commons.
Owen Connolly, the traitor betrayed the 1641 rebellion, while the patriot James Connolly (1868-1916) was of the Monaghan sept.
In the US, Most Rev. John Connolly (1750-1825) was Archbishop of New York and Mrs Cornelia Connolly (1809-1879) founded the Society of the Holy Child of Jesus.
