There are four surviving septs of the O'Connors; these are the Connacht O'Connors, O'Connor Kerry, O'Connor of Corcomroe and O'Connor Faly. There are three branches to the Connacht O'Connors; O'Connor Roe, O'Connor Don and O'Connor Sligo. These three claim descent from Roderick O'Connor (1116-1198), the last High King of Ireland.

After the Norman Invasion the Kerry O'Connors were driven from their land but still held considerable territory in north Kerry.

O'Connor Faly are seated in Offaly and also claim descent from an Irish High King, namely the second century Cathaoir Mor.

The O'Connors of Corcomroe live in north Co. Claire.

The name in Irish is O Conchobhair, meaning descended from Connor. O'Connor is derived from the Irish words cu meaning 'hound' and cobhar meaning 'desiring'.

The O'Connors are one of the important Irish families and have been noteworthy in the defense of their territories against invasion.

Charles Owen O'Connor, O'Connor Don (1838-1906) was President of the Royal Irish Academy and of The Society for Preserving the Irish Language. Cabach O'Connor and Hugh O'Connor were prominent in the wars of 1641 and 1652. General Sir Luke O'Connor (1832-1915) won the VC at the battle of Alma

Of the Kerry O' Connors, Arthur O'Connor (1763-1852) was an United Irishman and a Napoleonic general. This sept furnished two Catholic bishops in the US, Michael O' Connor (1810-1872) and James O'Connor (1823-1890).

There is a motto attached to the coat of arms of O'Connor Don. It is O Dia Gach Aon Cabhair, which translates into 'All Help Comes From God'.
