Variant Spellings; Costello, Costellow, Costelo, Costillo, Costily, Costley, Costolloe, Costoloe, Cushley, Nangle.
The Mac Costelloes quickly became hibernicized and were the first Norman family to use a Mac name. Nowadays the name is usually encountered without a prefix of any kind. The family were originally Nangles and their eponymous ancestor was one Gilbert de Nangle. Their territory is in east Mayo and into Co. Roscommon.
In Irish the name is Mac Oisdealbhaigh or son of Oisdealbhach (Gilbert).
Like many of the old Catholic aristocracy the Costelloes were ardent Jacobites and suffered for it. They became members of the 'Wild Geese" movement to the continent.
In our own time John A. Costello was Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland on two occasions.
