(Mac)Curtin:

Variant Spellings; Courtayne, Curtan, Curtain, Curtayne, Curten, Curtin, Kerty, MacCurtin, McCorry, McCurtane, McCurtaine, McCurry, McCurten, McGorry, McGurry, O'Curry, O'Courtaine.

The Curtins are a Co. Clare family and it is thought that the O prefix rather than Mac is more correct with this name. Through the centuries and internal struggles the sept has been scattered throughout the country so that today the name is found mostly in Cork and Limerick. Together with the MacBradys the MacCurtins were the hereditary ollaves to the O'Briens. Today the name is mostly found as plain Curtin without a prefix of any kind.

In Irish the name is MacCruitin; Cruitin means hunchback in Gaelic.

Hugh Buidhe (blonde) MacCurtin (1680-1755), a poet and lexicographer was, through the influence of Viscount Clare, the tutor to the children of the King of France.

John Curtin (1885-1945) was Prime Minister of Australia in 1941.

Thomas MacCurtain (1885-1920), was Lord Mayor of Cork and was shot by the Royal Irish Constabulary who broke into his home on the night of March 20th, 1920.
